  • Mastodon Aims to Attract Creators with New Features and Easier Onboarding

Mastodon, the decentralized, open-source social media platform and alternative to apps like X and Threads, announced plans this week to make its platform more approachable for newcomers while also rolling out new features designed to attract creators.

The updates come after Mastodon expanded its development team over the past 18 months, bringing in talent with experience in web, mobile, and back-end development, as well as hiring a dedicated designer. According to a blog post co-authored by Mastodon’s technical director, Renaud Chaput, and product designer, Imani Joy, these changes represent the platform’s vision for the future.

Part of the larger decentralized web known as the fediverse, Mastodon gained attention after Elon Musk’s acquisition of X (formerly Twitter) in October 2022. While the platform has experienced occasional growth spurts since then, retaining new users has been a challenge due to its more complex setup. Unlike traditional social networks, Mastodon requires users to pick a server during account creation — a step that often confuses those unfamiliar with decentralized platforms.

Currently, Mastodon has between 750,000 and 1 million monthly active users, depending on the source. Its own site cites roughly 785,000 users.

Simpler Onboarding and Stronger Community Servers

Mastodon’s upcoming updates aim to simplify the onboarding process and encourage users to explore smaller servers. Historically, new users tend to gravitate toward the largest servers, which can dilute the decentralized nature of the platform. As the blog post notes, “Mastodon is best when communities are spread across many independent servers, each with its own character and focus.”

To support server operators, Mastodon will introduce new admin tools to make moderation and maintenance easier. These include external blocklist support, content scanning for illegal content or spam, and options to reduce storage use by serving remote media posts through trusted third parties.

    Attracting Creators and Expanding Reach

Mastodon is also aiming to bring more creators — including journalists, public figures, and institutions — onto the platform. Planned updates include:

    • A redesigned user profile to better showcase a creator’s work
    • An enhanced compose experience for posting content
    • A new email notification feature, allowing followers to receive updates even if they don’t have a Mastodon account

These features could appeal to newsletter writers, reporters, and other creators seeking a broader audience.

Recent additions to Mastodon include Quote Posts, similar to X’s feature but with more user control, and a planned “Collections” feature, its take on Starter Pack-style user recommendations.

    Leadership Changes and Nonprofit Transition

The updates follow a shift in leadership at Mastodon. Founder Eugen Rochko stepped down as CEO when the platform transitioned to a nonprofit structure earlier this year. Felix Hlatky, based in Austria, now serves as executive director, with Dr. Marius Rothermund, a German lawyer, providing legal oversight for operations in the U.S., Germany, and Belgium.

With these updates, Mastodon aims to make its platform both more user-friendly and creator-focused, strengthening its position as a decentralized alternative to traditional social media.
